GPS?Observed Elastic Deformation Due to Surface Mass Balance Variability in the Southern Antarctic Peninsula

چکیده

In Antarctica, Global Positioning System (GPS) vertical time series exhibit non-linear signals over a wide range of temporal scales. To explain these non-linearities, number hypotheses have been proposed, among them the short-term rapid solid Earth response to contemporaneous ice mass change. Here we use GPS reveal variations in surface balance (SMB) Southern Antarctic Peninsula (SAP). At four locations SAP show that interannual SMB anomalies cause measurable elastic deformation. We regional climate model products calculate induced displacement assuming perfectly Earth. Our results reduction misfit when fitting linear trend corrected for variations. imply that, better understanding glacial isostatic adjustment signal variability must be considered.

Surface mass balance contributions to acceleration of Antarctic ice mass loss during 2003–2013

Recent observations from satellite gravimetry (the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission) suggest an acceleration of ice mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS). The contribution of surface mass balance changes (due to variable precipitation) is compared with GRACE-derived mass loss acceleration by assessing the estimated contribution of snow mass from meteorological rean...

Spatial patterns of variability in Antarctic surface temperature: Connections to the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode and the Southern Oscillation

The 17-year (1982-1998) trend in surface temperature shows a general cooling over the Antarctic continent, warming of the sea ice zone, with moderate changes over the oceans. Warming of the peripheral seas is associated with negative trends in the regional sea ice extent. Effects of the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) and the extrapolar Southern Oscillation (SO) on surface temperature ar...

ENSO and variability of the Antarctic Peninsula pelagic marine ecosystem

The West Antarctic Peninsula region is an important source of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) in the Southern Ocean. From 1980–2004 abundance and concentration of phytoplankton and zooplankton, krill reproductive and recruitment success and seasonal sea ice extent here were significantly correlated with the atmospheric Southern Oscillation Index and exhibited threeto five-year frequencies c...

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise has long been uncertain. While regional variability in ice dynamics has been revealed, a picture of mass changes throughout the continental ice sheet is lacking. Here, we use satellite radar altimetry to measure the elevation change of 72% of the grounded ice sheet during the period 1992-2003. Depending on the density of the snow giving rise to the o...

Surface deformation due to a strike-slip fault in an elastic gravitational layer overlying

We extend a technique previously used to model surface displacements resulting from thrust faulting in an elastic-gravitational l yer over a viscoelastic-gravitational h f-space to the case of strike-slip faulting. The method involves the calculation of the Green's functions for a strike-slip point source contained in an elastic-gravitational layer over a viscoelastic-gravitational half-space. ...
